#REVERB12 (DAY 9): What was the best book you read in 2012 and why?

JOURNEY OF THE ARTIST.

#REVERB12 (Day 9) PROMPT:
What was the best book you read in 2012, and why? (And by "Why?" I mean: Why did you read it? And why was it your favourite? Although these answers could be one and the same...!)

For 2012, I have chosen Teju Behan’s book, Drawing from the City.  This mesmerizing silk-screen printed, hand bound book printed on handmade paper contains rich black-and-white drawings of Teju Behan’s JOURNEY from her impoverished childhood to her enriched life as an ARTIST.

BLOGTOBERFEST #12 (DAY 18): MY EXPERIENCE OF THE WORLD THROUGH PHYSICAL SPACE

Hallelujah Pilgrims! I am capturing the waning days of October by blogging with Kat, "I Saw You Dancing," and her daily prompts provided by guest bloggers. Today's prompt comes from Lee, blogger at Sleepeybear's Spot. Lee wrote about the rocking chairs in the Charlotte Airport in North Carolina, USA. It inspired to ask bloggers this: "What item that most people consider normal or everyday has special significance for you?"

PHYSICAL SPACE is a special item or concept for me. (photo by Hallelujah Truth)

This photo illustrates my amazement at "physical space" and how we interact with it. I know that this "item" is a larger concept than a specific item; nonetheless, its significance impacts my EXPERIENCE OF THE WORLD.

This morning I met my artist friend and fellow ACNer Elise Helfer for coffee in a new physical space, Carroll Street Cafe in Cabbage Town, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. I found the cafe's environment warm, serene, and aromatically pleasing. The "vibe" uplifted me, held me, and soothed me.

As part of our coffee ritual, Elise and I haul our art out onto tables. This morning I had brought work that I was making decisions about sending into an upcoming show for WCAGA. The trilogy (Hallelujah Truth drawing, pumpkin, and photo) that you see above interact in a way with the physical space (shelf and two wall colors) that intrigues me. Does it you?

As an artist, I am constantly assessing everything around me and who am I in relationship to these things in this environment. How do the colors, scents, sounds, and objects impact me. Then when I put my ART into this space, how does my CREATION interact with it? I am absorbed by all of these stimuli? Am I alone in this practice? Do any of you in my SOUL BLOGGING community do this also?

That's Coffee With Hallelujah! Hallelujah for completing day #18 of Blogtoberfest!

BLOGGING IN AN INVITING PHYSICAL SPACE!

#REVERB11: SUPERHERO PILGRIM POWERS--WISDOM, COMMUNICATION, CONNECTION

SUPER HERO HALLELUJAH. Dear Fellow Pilgrim, I am ALL that you see in the above image. Although you can spot Hallelujah in the red and brown skirt and polka-dotted shirt, I am also Wandjina, and the Green Mother. I am the dinosaurs, wallaby, and flowers. I am the explosion of dots. This image is what being a SUPER HERO is all about! (art by Hallelujah Truth see original post)

#REVERB11 (December 9) PROMPT: SUPERHERO. If  you had super powers what would they be? (from Deborah Rubenstein)

Hallelujah is giggling because her Chiboogamoo told her that his SUPER POWERS would be to please me! Although there is some irony in his reply, I think he means it! Then my Chiboogamoo tells me that I already have many SUPER POWERS but would leave me to contemplate them by myself. As a world famous paleontologist, he is leaving early this morning to accompany an Emory University graduate student to an elementary school in Chamblee, Georgia, to teach four consecutive science classes comprised of twelve year olds about fossils and fossilization--now that's SUPER POWER!

Enough hemming and hawing! In the world of pretend and make believe, in the world of #REVERB11, my SUPER POWERS are trifold! (threesomes are so magical):

WISDOM: As a PILGRIM, I seek KNOWLEDGE of the UNIVERSE and how to use what I know. As a SUPER HERO PILGRIM, I already possess this deep understanding of LIFE. This understanding brings me PEACE.

COMMUNICATION: PILGRIM Hallelujah joyfully creates like a catnapping, easing her way into visual arts and blogistry, "hoping" to express her TRUTH. SUPER HERO Hallelujah spirals wildly like a whirling dervish manifesting WISDOM in a dazzling array of visual art, words, and teaching sizzling like sparklers! SssHHeeeEEsssZAAAaaammmmm!!!POP!!!OOOOhhhhhh!!! SUCCESS and PEACE!

CONNECTION: With the upmost honesty, as PILGRIM Hallelujah, I soul blog out of a longing to "connect" with like-minded souls. Some times my JOURNEY seems lonely, and--yes--often misunderstanding occurs, resulting in miscommunication and disconnection. Then ta-da! SUPER HERO Hallelujah, who is wise and a master communicator, connects with ALL PILGRIMS, like-and-unlike minded, resulting in

PEACE!

These triumvirate powers bring PEACE to me and to you! That's Coffee With Hallelujah. Let me know if I have communicated successfully with you. How have I connected with what's important in your heart? Share your SUPER POWERS with me by soul blogging!

FALLING IN LOVE WITH FELLOW REVERBERS! Take a look at these blogs--they pulled me in and made me feel good!

IMPERMANENCE—ART AND PALEONTOLOGY: THE NATURE OF REALITY

Owl Watercolors by Hallelujah Truth inspired by Blue Fire's 3-dimensional clay owls.

Hallelujah for the SPIRITUAL and the PHYSICAL! Hallelujah for the INFINITE and TEMPORAL! Hallelujah for my FELLOW ART PILGRIMS who CREATE deeply meaningful ART without the FEAR of its fragile brevity on this BEAUTIFUL EARTH. Hallelujah for the SCIENTISTS for their understanding of DEEP TIME.

One such artist is BLUE FIRE MACMAHON, a ceramic artist I have loved and admired for many years.  Many of her hand-built clay GODDESSES peak out from the corners of my home, including the ONE who presides over birds in the garden.  As the years have passed, I have lost two of her works to unexpected household happenings—a nail came out of the wall, and a dancing GODDESS slid to the floor in pieces. On another occasion my wonderful well-meaning Chiboogamoo was mopping and the mop handle lifted a GODDESS off the wall. SHE exploded into unglue-able fragments when she hit the ground! Another FEMININE figure sits on my nightstand with a chipped blue shoulder revealing the white clay beneath.

“Even fossils erode,” my brilliant companion Chiboogamoo says, trying to comfort me when a piece of ART passes away. And I am comforted by my household PALEONTOLOGIST! Hallelujah for husband PALEONTOLOGISTS!  Chiboogamoo is the first to remind me of geological time when we are running late for some engagement.   “What do a few minutes here or there matter in the course of GEOLOGIC TIME?” he utters soothingly. As a PALEONTOLOGIST, he reminds me of the scramble to study or collect fossils that erode into our human sight and then degrade in a few days, weeks, months or years—after being preserved for MILLIONS of YEARS!

IMPERMANENCE is a relative term, isn’t it? Whether we are talking about EPHEMERAL ART, such as BLUE FIRE’S clay works that embody elements of the human SOUL or evidence of ancient EXISTENCE preserved in the fossil record, EVERYTHING is CHANGING ALL the TIME. Our LIVES are in the CONSTANT STATE of FLUX. Impermanence is the nature of reality!

Recently, I purchased two more of BLUE FIRE’S sculptures: OWLS! She no longer lives in Atlanta, Georgia, where I met her, but lives in the mountains of North Carolina, where she is deepening in her SPIRITUAL JOURNEY (of which OWLS have emerged as a real and symbolic animal for her). Therefore, I purchased my OWL totems from Etsy, an online world marketplace for ARTISTS. In the “Note from Buyer,” I wrote to her that “I love the mortality inherent in these pieces as much as their vitality. IMPERMANENCE!”
BLUE FIRE'S OWL PERSON SINGING HER TRUTH TO THE NIGHT! She writes: "Her truth is the song of her heart pouring through her from the Dream of LOVE all around and within. We are all one. ALL is Love." See Blue Fire's fantastic work on her blog.

In response to my note, I received a gift from BLUE FIRE to “observe” IMPERMANENCE! Along with my purchases, I was given a small bundle wrapped in red cloth and tied with blue yarn! Inside was a hand-sized unfired earthen OWL totem! BLUE FIRE’S note read as follows:

Dear RuthTruth, this whole thing about impermanence fascinates me! Here is a little unfired owl…impermanent…if it is placed in the rain it will melt back into the Mother. BF

HALLELUJAH! HOW EXCITING! I immediately placed the small earthen owl outside with seashells from the Georgia coast, other artifacts of passing time (see my blog on the life-cycle of moonsnails)! Below are the first photos in my observation of IMPERMANENCE as given to me by ARTIST BLUE FIRE.
Ready for Rain!

After Rain Two and Sun!
After Rain Three, Fourth of July

As I watch my little owl with its heart in the center dissolve, I think about my PRECIOUS PRECIOUS LIFE, and of YOURS TOO. What we will we do on our JOURNEY here PILGRIMS? Before our TIME is up, and our PHYSICAL bodies erode, what will we make of our SPIRIT?

SUBSTITUTING BEAUTY FOR THE SPIRITUAL: CAROL RUCKDESCHEL--SPIRITUAL ART PILGRIM INTERVIEW #4

Hallelujah for the spectacular miracle of NATURE! Hallelujah for the PILGRIMS who spend their lives observing the wonders of the SEA, AIR, and LAND! In mid-May 2011, I found myself at the north end of Cumberland Island, Georgia, interviewing my fourth SPIRITUAL ART PILGRIM, Carol Ruckdeschel, a longtime naturalist who augments her documentation of the island’s ecology with illustrations.

Nestled amongst the long leaf pines and live oaks, we sat on her front porch drinking morning coffee surrounded by a myriad of mini-gardens bursting forth with squash, corn and tomato plants. Fledgling zinnias were emerging amongst established beds of mint, rosemary, and oregano. Two roosters crowed from their pens out beyond us. My Chiboogamoo sat silently with Carol and me, counting the numerous ruby throated hummingbirds (see the short video) visiting the colorful red and yellow sugar water feeder, which was so nearby that their “humming” was an audible part of our interview.

PRE-INTERVIEW NOTE: As the wife of the brilliant paleontologist, Chiboogamoo, I find my ARTist-self in extremely exuberant moments surrounded by other bright and talented scientists in the most amazing locations. Part of my practice of “having coffee” with Hallelujah (my creative persona), is being present to my SPIRITUAL ART needs and not only filtering “field experience” through my imaginative lens but also engaging the scientists present in my pursuit of the JOURNEYING SOUL. I am forever appreciative to Carol Ruckdeschel, biologist extraordinaire and ARTIST, for supporting me by being the FOURTH SPIRITUAL ART PILGRIM interviewee.

HALLELUJAH: What is SPIRITUALITY?
Leatherback Egg by Carol Ruckdeschel

CAROL: It’s different things to different people. But to me—I don’t know.

HALLELUJAH: Can you address how SPIRITUALITY relates to nature.

CAROL: It’s about learning….

HALLELUJAH: What do you want to learn?

CAROL: Whatever I can learn about the ecology of this island.
Loggerhead Egg by Carol Ruckdeschel

HALLELUJAH: You are so passionate about what you do. Can you explain that passion?

CAROL:  Beauty can be anything, a baby bird or art…anything that really moves me. You really feel that this is so beautiful. Beauty is something that you are almost just in awe. Beautiful. Like when the swifts arrive, I’m uplifted. They’re here! They nest in the chimney. They are part of my life. They are seasonal.

HALLELUJAH: So your SPIRITUALITY is experienced through the beauty of nature?
Dolphin Skull in the Cumberland Island Museum

CAROL: Spirituality is a word that has bad connotations. I used to have to go to church. I never understood it. The story of Jesus walking on water would lose me flat. As a kid, I would give my nickel and go outside and play.
Loggerhead Nest, by Carol Ruckdeschel

HALLELUJAH: Yes, I understand that attending church is where some people meet their SPIRITUAL needs, but attending church is not what we are talking about here in the SPIRITUAL ART PILGRIM interviews. My own SPIRITUALITY is more related to my focus on the life force in each living creature, the ephemeral, and immaterial. And you, you were talking about BEAUTY.

CAROL: Beauty is much more meaningful to me. It could substitute for the spiritual. Beauty can take many forms. It can be a piece of machinery. The Carnegie buildings on the south end of the island were built with real craftsmanship. They are beautiful and remind me of a time when people were proud of what they did.

Then there is natural beauty. For example, if I discover a new trackway, and then there is a revelation that it was made by an ant and not a beetle. That is a revelation to me because it answered a question (See the photo that Chiboogamoo, Carol, and I had made the previous day of a wingless wasp, Timulla floridensis, making a trackway that we previously had not identified).
There have been times in my life when I’ve invoked the “great spirit,” when something needs to be thanked for something, but I can’t formulate thoughts about that.
Carol's random garden composition.

HALLELUJAH: How would you define ART?

CAROL: Again there are many kinds. What I do as art is different than what you (Hallelujah) do as art.

HALLELUJAH: Is it? Why do you do ART?

CAROL: I don’t know why I do it. I get the urge to do a particular scene or something. It is done selfishly for me. That’s beautiful. It was fun that I could do it. It is not from any motivation like yours—which I think it is much more admirable. You create a design and do it.

HALLELUJAH: What kind of ART do you make?
Adult Loggerhead, by Carol Ruckdeschel
CAROL: What I do mostly is illustration. I’m too much of a realist. I want to paint more island scenes. That is different from what I’ve done. What I’ve done in the past is to use art to make figures for scientific illustration.

Carol turns and asks Chiboogamoo if he makes any art that is beyond scientific illustrations for his articles and books. And he and I discuss the more imaginative artwork that we are doing for the Darwin exhibit at Atlanta’s Fernbank Museum of Natural History in September 2011. Then Carol continues….

I would like to push myself back into it.  I have really felt the urge to do more art.  Who else can paint an alligator with a big amount of mud on its nose?

HALLELUJAH: You did these turtle drawings that seem so much more than “illustration” to me.

CAROL: Those drawing come from how turtles develop in the egg. The turtle grows at the top of the egg. When the baby turtles hatch, they start out rounded and have to stay in the nest a while to straighten out.

HALLELUJAH: What is the connection between SPIRITUALITY and the ART you make?

CAROL: I like it to be pleasing to the eye and to be beautiful. No it is more than that…. Sometimes it is an emotional expression. But most of the time, I don’t indulge myself that much. To me, I have to have nothing to do, to make art. I have to feed my chickens, water my garden, and my book has to be written. Art takes second fiddle.

HALLELUJAH: Who or what has been the most influential in your life with regards to ART?

CAROL: I have been doing drawing and art since I was a kid. I was given a piece of paper and pencil to occupy myself. It was my “Gameboy.” I remember my dad was a hunter, who liked guns and got those outdoor magazines like Field and Stream.  One of those magazines had a full page of someone’s art. That art page always intrigued me.  For instance, there was one with a person on a horse hunting a bear at the edge of a mountain. That really impressed me. These scenes always had animals.  But it wasn’t just a scene—action was involved. My interest was in the animals and how well the person could paint them. Oh my gosh, these scenes were beautiful!

I had one friend in Rochester, New York, an older guy, who did beautiful things. He painted the Franklinia alatamaha, a small flower on a really large scale. He had a dedication to art.

HALLELUJAH: I am so moved by the way you have organized your yard. Everywhere I look, I see mini-compositions as if every object has been placed with thoughtful intent.
A random arrangement outside Carol Ruckdeschel's research lab on Cumberland.

CAROL: The compositions are a result of randomness. (Carol pauses and then nods her head in realization toward a line of five gallon buckets arcing around one of her vegetable gardens.) Well, that orange bucket offends me terribly. It was with the blue buckets, and I had to move it. There is thought given—but very little.
Random blue bucket composition.
HALLELUJAH: In the future, what ART do you intend to make?

CAROL: What I call real art. Instead of illustration, something that means something to me. Like this watercolor I have in the museum that I did because the buzzards had pooped on the roof and I could see it in the moonlight. That’s really great!

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: Immeasurable thanks to Carol Ruckdeschel, founder and curator of the Cumberland Island Museum, co-author with C. Robert Shoop of Sea Turtles of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States. She is a generous and kind SOUL, who attended to me and my simultaneous interests in FLORA, FAUNA, ART, and SPIRIT. In addition, she hosted and “played” with both my Chiboogamoo and me along the shores, in the dunes and maritime forests of Cumberland. She is a friend. Gratitude to V.J. Henry, one of the foremost coastal geologists along the Atlantic coast, who died in May 2010 and hosted us along with Carol in 2008 when we camped on the bluffs above the north end marsh. Thanks and love to my dear boon companion Chiboogamoo, whose deep curiosity and book writing (Life Traces of the Georgia Coast) keep us returning to the wonderlands of the Georgia barrier islands.

2011: SAY YES

Hallelujah for NEW BEGINNINGS. I welcome the START of 2011 with open arms and CURIOSITY. What is possible in the next 12 months? What discoveries will I make on my ARTFUL and SOULFUL PILGRIMAGE? What PILGRIM will I meet who will make that significant difference in my JOURNEY? In what NEW ways will I contribute to the LOVING SOULS in my life?

A FELLOW SOJOURNER and POET, Alice Teeter speaks to me through the poetry in her book, “When it happens to you…”. Today, one particular poem, “Say Yes,” is speaking to me. The first three lines of the poem suggest:

Say Yes

Step off into this unknown

Into this marvelous and terrible Yes

Oh PILGRIM! We know part of the JOY of the GREAT MYSTERY is that it is simultaneously “marvelous” and “terrible”—beckoning and pushing us away at the same time. It takes SOULFUL COURAGE to step into YES!

Alice Teeter creates multiple ways for us to say YES. We can “float,” “carry,” “blow,” and “scatter” YES. We can even “lean” into YES, watching it like a maple seed spiraling down in front of us!

Saying YES is like creating a “seed” that we can plant along our JOURNEY. By saying YES, we send a positive message out into the universe surrounding us.

And just think—it is possible that other PILGRIMS might hear our saying YES. Alice Teeter’s poem concludes:

You are standing on the sweet spot of the stage

Your voice will carry for eons and leagues

In your softest song say Yes to me

I hear you from this thousand miles away

Hallelujah for saying YES! And for being HEARD! I am BEGINNING my 2011 saying YES joyfully to both the marvelous and terrible! And you PILGRIM, what will you say YES to this year? SOUL BLOG with me at Coffee with Hallelujah, so I can HEAR YOU!

For your delight, below is Alice Teeter’s poem, “Say Yes,” in its entirety.

Say Yes

Say Yes

Step off into this unknown

Into this marvelous and terrible Yes

Yes to unknowing, Yes

Fling your arms wide to Yes

Be light and say Yes

Say Yes softly in a whisper

Float on Yes

Carry Yes like a feather you find floating

That the wind will take away

Blow Yes like a dandelion seed

Scatter it to the winds

And me, I say Yes waiting for your Yes

Leaning in and watching for it floating down

A maple seed on the breeze spiraling

Wisps of white floating across my field of vision

My ears are listening for that whisper

You are standing on the sweet spot of the stage

Your voice will carry for eons and leagues

In your softest song say Yes to me

I hear you from this thousand miles away

From When it happens to you…, poems by Alice Teeter
