PALEONTOLOGIST BARBIE EXPLORES CRYSTAL PALACE PARK: South London Treasure of 19th Century Dinosaur Sculptures, Questions Art Depictions

PALEONTOLOGIST BARBIE'S PROPOSAL FOR A NEW WALL MURAL.  "Don't you think these images are intriguing?" asks Paleontologist Barbie. I think art should be used to awaken everyone's curiosity." She explained that she didn't quite get why Hawkins' images weren't used in the mural at the park's entrance, and showed me this quick sketch she made during her visit to the famous paleontological park.  In May 2012, Paleontologist Barbie, my Chiboogamoo (a.k.a. Anthony "Tony" Martin), and I visited the United Kingdom, a great place to broaden our knowledge about paleontology as a science and how it is portrayed in art. Therefore, we visited Crystal Palace Park in south London to see a wonderful group of 19th century sculptures of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals created by artist Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins.

Hallelujah Truth: Can you tell me why it was so important for you and Chiboogamoo to visit Crystal Palace Park?

Paleontologist Barbie: Yes, I would love to tell you! Completed in 1854, these sculptures were the first such pieces that attempted to recreate dinosaurs, Mesozoic marine reptiles, and large Pleistocene mammals. So they have artistic, historic, and paleontological significance. For me, and anyone else for that matter, this visit to Crystal Palace Park was a big deal.

DINOSAURS, ART, AND HISTORY—A DAY IN THE PARK. Paleontologist Barbie is awestruck by the concrete behemoths set on an island in Crystal Palace Park. “Wow, look – it’s the original depictions of Hyaelosaurus, Plesiosaurus, Ichthyosaurus, Megalosaurus, and Iguanodon!” she rattled off, impressing everyone around her. MARY ANNING WOULD HAVE LOVED THIS DINO-TERRIFIC PARK. The sculpture of Ichthyosaurus, a large marine reptile from the Early Jurassic Period, had emotional significance for Paleontologist Barbie. She had just visited the Natural History Museum of London only two days before, which had many ichthyosaurs discovered by Mary Anning (one of her heroes) on display. “Whoa, what’s with the weird tail?” she exclaims, noting one of the anatomical inaccuracies of this artwork. “But I guess I shouldn’t be one to talk about unrealistic proportions,” she later admits in a moment of self-reflection. (Photo and caption by Anthony Martin)
LOVING THE MULTI-SYLLABIC NAMES. “Teleosaurus!” she says upon recognizing their crocodile-like forms. These works are fairly accurate representations of Middle Jurassic marine reptiles that lived in the same seas as ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs. “Huh, looks like the one on the left is happy to see the other one,” she notes with Freudian undertones. (Photo and caption by Anthony Martin)
QUOTING FROM DICKENS ON DINOSAURS. Upon seeing the statue of Megalosaurus, a Jurassic theropod dinosaur (which also was the first formally named dinosaur) Paleontologist Barbie taps into her inner English major and quoted thusly from Charles Dickens’ novel Bleak House (1853) "As much mud in the streets, as if the waters had but newly retired from the face of the earth, and it would not be wonderful to meet a Megalosaurus, forty feet long or so, waddling like an elephantine lizard up Holborn Hill.” This was one of the first uses of a dinosaur as a literary metaphor, and as a renaissance kind of gal, you could bet that Paleontologist Barbie would remind people of this connection between science, art, and literature. (Photo and caption by Anthony Martin)
DRAWING HELPS ME TO REALLY SEE. Paleontologist Barbie explains that she loves drawing while in the field because it makes her stop to examine what she is looking at, and allows her to "see" more deeply. IGUANAS ON STEROIDS? The two Iguanodon statues also amaze Paleontologist Barbie, as these recreations are very different from what Iguanodon – an Early Cretaceous ornithopod dinosaur – actually looked like. Complete skeletons of this dinosaur, which in 1825 was the second formally named dinosaur, were discovered in Belgium in the 1870s and 1880s, and helped to correct the mistaken view of this dinosaur as an iguana on steroids. “Hey, it’s art: deal with it!” she says to paleontological purists and pedants everywhere. (Photo and caption by Anthony Martin)
UNDERSTANDING GEOLOGY JUST MAKES THE WORLD SO FASCINATING. Paleontologist Barbie is temporarily distracted by a geological display in the park, an outcrop of coal, sandstone, and shale with normal faults. A normal fault is often caused by tension (pulling apart), which causes rocks to bend and then fracture, with each block of rock sliding down the fault planes. “Look, it’s not my fault those rocks are broken, it’s normal!” she says with delight at her use of geo-puns. (Photo and caption by Anthony Martin)
MARVELING AT PALEO-MAMMALS. One of the most impressive non-dinosaur sculptures at Crystal Palace Park is of a giant ground sloth from the Pleistocene Epoch, Megatherium, here caught in a blatant act of tree-hugging. “I think you need to find another tree if you want to get some dinner, buddy!” she calls out helpfully. (Photo and caption by Anthony Martin)
WOW. Sculptures of the giant Pleistocene Irish elk (Megaloceros) likewise make imposing figures on the grounds of Crystal Palace Park. “Yo, check out that rack!” she says with a deep, macho voice, cracking herself up. Little does she know, her statement is taken seriously by the European Union and is later written into the script of a video purportedly promoting science to young girls(Photo and caption by Anthony Martin)
Hallelujah Truth: What did you like the most about seeing the dinosaur statues in situ on an island?

Paleontologist Barbie: I not only loved how they were arranged on an island surrounded by water, but also how some of the non-dinosaurs are in the water. Plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs, and crocodile-like animals are shown in what he thought were their natural habitats.

Hallelujah Truth: What can the average person learn by visiting Crystal Palace Park?

Paleontologist Barbie: They can learn how science and art often change together through time. These artworks are based on thoughts about prehistoric animals in the 1850s, and today, we have very different art showing the same animals. The fossils stayed the same, but our views of them changed. Artists help us scientists visualize our thoughts about fossils. That's why I like to keep my "artist" muscle in shape!

"I'm proposing that Crystal Palace Park change its entrance wall mural to something like my sketch!" I think young budding paleontologists will be inspired by these images! Hallelujah Truth: Has this given you any additional insights about how art and science are used together to reach out to the public?

Paleontologist Barbie: Sure! I mean, if you look at news stories about a new fossil find, almost every one of them has some pretty picture, like an artistically arranged photo of the fossil itself, or an artist's recreation of the fossil as a living plant or animal in its original environment. You can even see how art is used at the entrance of Crystal Palace to lure park guests in to visit the statues, even though it uses more mainstream images of dinosaurs.

Hallelujah Truth: Have you been inspired by these Crystal Palace Park creatures?

Paleontologist Barbie: Definitely! Wouldn’t it be fun to see the statues of Iguanodon and Megalosaurus fighting? Or the ichthyosaurs or plesiosaurs going for the same fish? I would like to see these sculptures interacting with one another instead of how they are shown now--isolated and not even looking at one another.

Hallelujah Truth: Is there anything else that you wanted to do while you were at Crystal Palace Park?

Paleontologist Barbie: Yes! It would have be such great fun to get out to the island and actually climb on the statues! (She giggles a loud TEE HEE!) How cool it would be to get on the back of a Megalosaurus or an Iguanodon. But I understand that they can’t have people going out there. I guess I could have asked for permission, but I don’t think the British government even knew I was in the country.


NOT JUST ANOTHER DAY AT THE PARK. REVERB10: EVERYTHING is OK: ReEnvisioning Reality through the Stories We Tell in Science and Art!



Hallelujah for REVERB10 challenging me to remember a symbolic moment of OKAYNESS in 2010! Based on NOTHING and EVERYTHING, I chose to recall Lark Quarry, a famous dinosaur trackway in central Queensland, Australia. This “hotspot” along the Dinosaur Trail illustrates beautifully how SCIENCE, ART, IDEA, and STORY TELLING collide to create a REALITY we can understand.

Okay…it all begins about 95 million years ago with a high-pitched roar and thunderous footsteps along a riverside! A monstrous two-legged carnivorous dinosaur approaches a large flock of small two-legged herbivorous dinosaurs, causing them to scatter in a chaotic frenzy. Who would be dinner? More than 3,000 of their fleeing tracks were preserved in the muddy soil, leaving an intriguing puzzle to be pieced together by 20th century SCIENTISTS.

Based on evidence and the understanding of that evidence in 1979, Tony Thulborn and Mary Wade explained the predation story above. (Click on this link to see a short video of this tracksite and hear my Chibogamoo narrate this now-well known story.) To sum it up again: There was a meat eating theropod, close to the size of a Tyrannosaurus rex, that was in search of a meal and went to the river to pick up a small ornithopod or two. A stampede ensued.

This 95-million year old story has been repeated and illuminated by ART. Hearsay is that when Steven Spielberg was making the movie, “Jurassic Park,” his consultant, celebrity paleontologist Jack Horner, referenced Lark Quarry. Another example is the movable metal dinosaur sculpture in the exhibit at the Lark Quarry Interpretative Centre. Exhibit viewers can push a button which causes the mechanical sculpture to open its toothy carnivorous jaws—jaws convincingly capable of consuming a dinner of small dinosaurs. Other art illustrating the story are the wooden cutouts representing fleeing two-legged dinosaurs the size of chickens. The educational material at the centre even goes so far as to give one of the vulnerable ornithopods a name, “Ollie.”





ART is wonderful for holding ideas—until these ideas change. Welcome to the 21st century and a different way of interpreting the evidence! Based on measurements and complex calculations, paleontologists can now better determine if the fossilized tracks are those of an ornithopod (a plant eater) or a theropod (a meat eater).

Last July, when we saw Anthony Romilio, a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland, standing on the Lark Quarry floor in his stocking feet with measuring tools, little did we know that he was about to TRANSFORM the long-standing predation story. And he has!

Using current methods of calculation, he has startling evidence that the large dinosaur, which caused the stampede at the riverside, was not a carnivorous theropod! It was a large herbivorous ornithopod, which was not looking for a meaty meal. (Read the news story at this link, to learn more.)

The Lark Quarry site most be RE-STORIED in ART. What will the new images look like? Will the large moving metal dinosaur sculpture have to be removed? Will the educational images on the signage at the interpretative centre change? Will the dinosaur museum at the Corfield and Fitzmaurice building on Winton’s mainstreet have to change its dramatic Lark Quarry diorama showing a victimized ornithopod?



SCIENCE and ART! IDEAS and STORIES! REALITY! I am OKAY now and forever as long as ALL of us PILGRIMS travel with open minds and hearts—changing our stories as we need to in order to reflect REALITY as we understand it NOW! Hallelujah Truth!

ART and SCIENCE: TEACHING COASTAL GEORGIA ABUNDANCE




Along the Georgia coast, about 250 miles from Atlanta, we possess a rare and magical environment—one created by a string of barrier islands. Seemingly permanent to us mortals, these islands shift and change incessantly, becoming less at times and more at others as sand is washed away or accrued.

It is right here at Jekyll Island, where I am now (as well as the other Georgian barrier islands), that LIFE from the mainland merges with the sea, at first pausing in the marshes, hesitating at fiddler crab burrows and meandering along well-traveled raccoon networks before oozing out into the Atlantic. Sea turtle hatchlings intuitively find their way from the hot sandy dunes to the surf past hungry ghost crabs. The foam along the shore whispers of the teeming life surging beneath the sea’s surface.

HALLELUJAH for this coastal abundance! Hallelujah for the mud, the plankton, the callianassid shrimp, for the sea pansies and mollusks! Hallelujah for the plovers, grackles, seagulls, and pelicans! Hallelujah for the palm trees, saw palmettos, the live oaks with their strands of Spanish moss and the raccoons, deer, opossum, and tortoises that live beneath their shadows! Hallelujah for MOTHER SEA, SKY, and EARTH!

HALLELUJAH to the LOVING SOULS of ARTISTS who respond to the richness of this coastal environment by making ART. The ART that I found at Tidelands Nature Center, a small edifice sitting on the western facing marsh near the amusement park, is a gloriously thoughtful and educational response to the various coastal habitats and their denizens. Clearly and effectively, this ART is used to instruct! Let me illustrate!


A tantalizing silvery life-sized sculpture of a newborn Right Whale made by artist Thomas Prochnow greets visitors before they enter Tidelands’ front door. Because of the beauty of the “beast” as conveyed by the ARTIST, we humans stop to admire the baby whale sculpture and discover the informative sign next to it. We learn that this endangered species, hunted almost to depletion because of its “rightness,” is unique to our coastline. In the early winter months, mother Right Whales travel to our Georgia shore from the northeast to give birth in the shallow areas called the Georgia Bight. It is possible to sight these creatures off the coast from December to April! HALLELUJAH!
Round cerulean blue discs with mauve and green accents drift effortlessly over the heads of Tidelands’ guests at the door as they deposit the 2-dollar entry fee in a large pickle jar. Odd creatures peer down at the viewer. What are these fantastical creations?



My Chiboogamoo, a regular fount of knowledge, whispers in my ear—“Protozoans--single celled organisms…maybe plankton….” Each living thing is abstracted in clean line and form, left in simplicity to radiate out from its spinning orb. Once this mobile had captured by my gaze, I found it difficult to pull away--so subtle, so available for instruction about LIFE at ITS most elemental level! ART and SCIENCE wedded!

Advancing through the Tidelands’ center after stopping at displays that illustrate the mysterious but predictable cycles of marine life, such as the whelk, and peaking in at LIVING guests like the baby alligators or sea urchins in aquariums, the Tideland’s guest approaches ART in a big way!

Buddy Hale, a Jacksonville artist, continues to depict the multi-various LIFE of the maritime forest on a large mural that has exploded from the wall opposite the turtle tanks onto the ceiling. Viewers are challenged to find specific birds and mammals in the dark woodland painting—an excellent activity which mirrors real LIFE since much WILDLIFE can only be spotted after quiet and patient waiting and seeking.
Walking outside the Tidelands’ inside teaching facility, guests see more of Buddy Hale’s ART. His sculpture of a large gray manatee hovers next to the door with instructional information beside it. Out near the turtle pen, an architectural structure has been constructed to honor the oyster, recognizing it as a “keystone” species for the life of the marsh. Dubbed the “Oyster Gate,” by its creators, Buddy and his collaborator Daniel Harris, this ARTful archway frames the marsh. Each of its “building” blocks is a work of ART depicting various creatures essential to the coastal eco-systems.

HALLELUJAH to ARTISTS! HALLELUJAH to SCIENTISTS! HALLELUJAH to the GEORGIA COAST! Artists like Buddy Hale, Thomas Prochnow, and Daniel Harris help us to SEE what is around us. HALLELUJAH to the host of scientists from the University of Georgia, who use these ARTIST’s work to TEACH us all about LIFE! I am celebrating LIFE in its ABUNDANCE! HALLELUJAH!
